 "gěi wǒ mǎi píng shuǐ" is more natural than "wǒ mǎi píng shuǐ". The  character "给" may imply " help me get".

从前有个小孩儿，叫孔融。

孔融拿了一个小梨。

爸爸看见了，问道：

dà hǎi shàng ，

太阳是从水里跳出来的。
tài yáng shì cóng shuǐ lǐ tiào chū lái de 。

草原上，
cǎo yuán shàng ，

太阳是从草里冒出来的。
tài yáng shì cóng cǎo lǐ mào chū lái de 。

I find that some articles from textbook for Chinese kids are effective for a learner. And I think the effective way is to recite them. There is no shortcut when you first touch a second language. Some divert Chinese characters and directly use pinyin to learn spoken Chinese, and I think it’s only effective for a Short time.
